Designing Women of Postwar Britain: Their Art and the Modern Interior is an exhibition of works by three influential female artists, which will be displayed in the Fine Arts Center's El Pomar Gallery.
Celebrate this stunning exhibition of bold designs that revolutionized home interiors in postwar Britain!
The art of textile design radically changed after World War II. Three women artists working in England in the 1950s were pivotal in this artistic revolution. The drab days of the War were suddenly washed with the light of the fresh, progressive designs by Lucienne Day, Marian Mahler and Jacqueline Groag.
Original artist designs with bold abstract patterns, inspired by Modern artists like Alexander Calder and Joan Miró, as well as the use of dramatic saturated color marked a dramatic departure from England's conventional notions of interior fabric design. Designing Women showcases the stunning geometric and abstract designs of the three leaders with furnishing fabrics, hand-towels, and dishware in varied sizes and colors.
Day changed the direction of furnishing fabrics with her 1951 design, Calyx. The revolutionary design, introduced at the Festival of Britain, captured the spirit of the era and subsequently received the coveted International Design Award of the American Institute of Decorators.

ZZ Top plays red-hot Texas boogie and blues, and no one does it better - or has done it longer - than this "little ol' band from Texas."
The trio's enduring appeal owes much to their mastery of and feel for rootsy forms. Guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard were influenced by such blues masters as Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. From the beginning they took a hard-rocking power-trio approach to the blues, cultivating a new audience for it in the Seventies and Eighties with superior musicianship as well as attitude, style and some devilishly funny songs.
The genius of ZZ Top is that they're reverential about the blues but loose and funny about the subject matter of their songs. Their songs are laden with pop-culture references, sexual double entendres and the determined pursuit of a good time. They have written about fast cars, fishnet stockings, sharp clothes, TV dinners, cheap sunglasses and "tush." They visually connected with the MTV generation by virtue of Hill's and Gibbons' long beards and fur-lined guitars. For many, ZZ Top have been the premiere party band on the planet.
